Prevent Autorun Virus Infection

One of the most troubling viruses which easily infects our system is Autorun.inf. Generally all the secondarystorage devices have this feature of Autorun and this virus virus takes advantage of this feature and infects our system. So, we ought to have a good anti-virus on our system to take care of it. Show Hidden Files And Folders Not Working??

Trouble:

Sometimes a virus or some malicious script makes the hidden files and folders not visible even when it is explicitly enabled. In this case even if the user enables the Show hidden files and folders in

Tools > Folder options > View menu, Hidden files and folder does not become visible.

Lets see how to fix it.

Fix:

First and foremost is the point that the user has enabled the Show hidden files and folder

1. Go to Tools > Folder options. This will show a folder options menu.

2. Go to View tab and select the option “Show hidden files and folder”

The hidden files and folders are displayed by this method normally. But in case some virus or script is preventing the hidden files and folders from being visible, follow the below steps:

1. Go to your Start > Run, type regedit and press enter. This will open registry editor.

2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folde r\Hidden\SHOWALL

Note:

DELETE the value CheckedValue in the right window if it already there and type is REG_SZ

Now create a new DWORD value again with the same name CheckedValue.

3. Double click the value called CheckedValue, and modify its data value (DWORD Value) to 1 (0×00000001) . Close registry editor after this.

If still folder options is reverted back to don’t show hidden files and folders then it could be due to some virus still in action.

Note: If above solution does not work for you, make sure to make your system completely virus free by updating your anti-virus and running a complete scan.

Why does Task Manager, MSCONFIG, or REGEDIT Disappear While Opening?

Symptoms

When you open System Configuration Utility [MSCONFIG], Registry Editor or Task Manager, they flash for a second and quit. This symptom is caused by Viruses. These three are important system utilities which the viruses target.

A quick workaround is to rename the files and run them. Extracting new copies of these files with the same name may not help. Rename these utilities and run them or use MS-MVP Doug Knox's Emergency Msconfig, Regedit, Task Manager utility. This utility creates usable copies of MSCONFIG, REGEDIT AND TASK MANAGER by creating copies of the actual files to C:\EmergencyUtils folder.

Follow-up with complete Malware cleanup.

Another reason why Regedit can't be launched from Run

As of recent, I've seen reports of the bogus file named regedit.com in Windows systems. This file is actually a Trojan file, which is set the Hidden and System attributes. The regedit.com file may be present in %Systemroot% or %Systemroot%\System32 folders. This file should be deleted.

Normally, users type regedit in Start, Run dialog to launch the Registry Editor. But, if both Regedit.exe (legitimate) and Regedit.com (Trojan) are present in your Windows or System32 folder, the file with the .COM extension takes precedence. As a result, regedit.com process launches. When regedit.com file runs, nothing may happen. Or, the following error may be seen.

ERROR: An Extended Memory Manager is already installed. XMS Driver Not Installed.

To prevent this scenario, you must use the explicit file name and the Path to load the Registry Editor in emergencies. Examples:

• Regedit.exe
• %Systemroot%\Regedit.exe

Here is a trojan Win32.Alcan.C, which copies the file regedit.com (and others) to the Windows folder.
