How to Take Perfect Sunset Photos

You must have seen great photos at sunset and wonder how people get them. In this article I will tell you how to achieve this effect.

1.      The first thing you need to do is find out when the sun is going to set on that particular day. Then you will want to find your spot. Finding the spot is entirely up to you. Many people like a beach setting, but anywhere that you can see the sunset is a good place to start. The place really depends on your style. So choose your location wisely.

2.       Now we get into the technical part. You are going to want to set you camera on manual for this. It should be the M on the dial. If you are unfamiliar with using the manual setting I highly recommend looking through the manual and reading up on the setting of your camera.

3.       Now remember in most sunset photos we are trying to capture the beautiful sky. So that is what you will expose for. So using your camera's meter find a spot that is next to the sun and has only sky. Set your exposure to that spot.
Now you have exposed properly for the sky. You will now want set your exposure compensation to be a little under exposed. The exposure compensation button is the one that has a +/- symbol. by pressing it and holding it with some models it allows you to adjust the meter that is in the photo here.

4.         Now you can compose the shot. This once again is up to you. I am not going to give you rules as to where to put what in the photo. Namely because some of the best photos i have seen have broken the rules in photography. But i will say that horizon lines in the center of the image tend to be boring and so does the sun being in the middle of the image. So I would stay away from that. Composing the shot to enhance what you are looking for is you best bet. If your focus is the sky, make that take up most of the frame. If there is an interesting thing in the foreground you want make sure you make that prominent.

5.          Snap your photo. and use the exposure compensation to bracket and create several different exposures and choose your favorite one.

10 Tips For Better Landscape Photos

1. The Right Light

Landscape photography is as much about light as it is about composition or location. In the wrong light, even the most wonderful location can appear ordinary in a two-dimensional image. Be sure to use the warmth of early morning and late afternoon light to illuminate and enhance your landscapes. Harsh, overhead light is rarely complimentary to a scene.

2. Dynamic Composition

Composition is a key element in successful landscape photography. Placing the elements artistically within the frame ensures that you are doing more than just taking a snapshot of a beautiful place. Use compositional rules such as the rule of thirds, patterns and leading lines to ensure the image stands alone and is not solely reliant upon the beauty of the scene to draw in the viewer.

3. Filters

Filters like polarisers are essential for saturating color and enhancing skies. Neutral density graduated filters can dramatize skies and also balance out radical differences of exposure between foreground and background. Warming filters enhance the natural warmth of morning and afternoon light. These filters are a necessary part of the landscape photographer's kit.

4. Foreground Interest

A foreground element is often vital to maintain interest in the landscape image. These elements can vary from rocks and plants to trees, even man-made objects.

5. Use A Tripod

Because landscape photography usually requires smaller apertures, shutter speeds may often be too slow to handhold, so mounting your camera on a tripod becomes necessary. Also, using a tripod ensures the photographer takes time to accurately compose, employ filters, set exposures and select lenses.

Professional Photography Tips For Compact Digital Camera Users - How to Take Good Portrait Photos

If you've seen many beautiful portrait photos and you might be wondering how to take stunning pictures of your subjects' faces - it can be done by using both SLR cameras and compact digital cameras. However, as for amateur photographers (those who have limited knowledge about photography) - if you're under this category; you might be having difficulties of producing good portrait pictures with your point-and-shoot camera.

Certainly, there are few tips that you can take dazzling portrait photos by using your point-and-shoot camera:

Tip No.1: Taking multiple photo shoots in different angles

Basically, your subject's face is normally focused and placed at the center of the picture during a portrait photo shoot. In that case, not all subjects look nice by staring straightly at the camera lens during the photo shoot. Therefore, you can request the subject to stare slightly to the left or right at the lens during the photo shooting process. At the other way around, let the subject naturally look at you - this time, the photographer changes the position of her camera, i.e. by adjusting the height of the tripod, or taking few shots at different angles.

Tip No.2: Having different backdrops or themes for your subject

Choosing the right backdrop or theme is important to make your subject's face (a.k.a. the foreground) more noticeable and well-perceived by others. Avoid using striking colored backgrounds that could overshadow your subject. You can use other materials such as solid colored wrinkled cloths, boards or walls as your backdrops which can create different tones on your subject's face.

If you want to have real underwater themes - you can use the Canon waterproof digital camera to take clear and excellent underwater portrait photos which is impossibly taken by using conventional types of digital cameras.

Tip No. 3: Try suitable shooting mode for the right photo-taking condition

Make use of the advanced presets or shooting modes so that you can take high-quality portrait pictures in different conditions. For Canon PowerShot digital camera users, they would usually use the "Sunset/Evening Shooting Mode" to capture portrait pictures outdoors in the evening with the brightness, colors and contrast are well-adjusted.

Tip No. 4: Dress your subject

Based on the well-known quote - "Clothes make the man"; in this case, your subject's appearance can be enhanced with pleasant-looking attires. If you want to make your subject looks elegant - for instance, wearing a matching business suit can make your portrait picture look formal. In contrast, you can have your subjects to wear sports apparels (including baseball cap, sports jacket, jerseys) that would create a perfect athletic impression as well as develop a refreshing view of your subjects' faces.

11 Tips for Beginner Photographers

1. Don’t go crazy buying the most expensive equipment right away.

It’s possible to get very nice photos with an inexpensive point and shoot. The more photos you take, the more you’ll know about what kind of camera to get when it’s time to upgrade.

2. Consider a tripod.

On the other hand, an inexpensive tripod is worth getting, especially if you have shaky hands like mine. For even more stability, use your camera’s timer function with a tripod .

3. Keep your camera with you all the time.

Photo ops often come when you least expect it. If you can keep your equipment relatively simple – just a small camera bag and a tripod – you might be able to take advantage of some of those unexpected opportunities. Or, if your phone has a camera, use it to take “notes” on scenes you’d like to return to with your regular camera.

4. Make a list of shots you’d like to get.

For those times you can’t carry your camera around, keep a small notebook to jot down places you’d like to come back and photograph. Make sure to note any important details, like the lighting, so you can come back at the same time of day or when the weather’s right. If you don’t want to carry a notebook, send yourself an email using your cell phone with Jott.com.

5. Don’t overlook mundane subjects for photography.

You might not see anything interesting to photograph in your locality, but try looking at familiar surroundings with fresh eyes. You might catch an interesting trick of the light or find some unexpected wildflowers in your known places. Often a simple subject makes the best shot.

6. Enjoy the learning process.

The best part of having a hobby like photography is never running out of things to learn. Inspiration is all around you. Look at everything with the eyes of a photographer and you’ll see opportunities you never noticed before.

How To Get Better Digital Photos In Low Light Conditions Without Using A Flash

Digital photography is easy but only when you have plenty of light and the conditions are ideal. But, as you may know, lighting conditions in digital photography aren’t always as we would like them. In digital photography its essential that we work with light as much as humanly possible otherwise disappointing results may occur.

The flash is the biggest solution to low light digital photography. However the problem with this is that not all situations can benefit from using the flash. Not only does it interfere with your “moment” socially and artistically, but the flash can flatten out your digital images. This is especially true for a flash that is built-in on digital cameras. The built in flash (and a flash in general) has the effect of lighting your subject on the front only which compresses the depth in your digital photos. Compressed depth can really decrease the beauty of your subject in your digital photography.

Low Light ImageThis can be avoided to a certain degree, depending on your subject and by watching how your light falls. Learn how to see how the light falls on your surroundings and your mind will become adept at knowing what works and what doesn’t with the flash.

Really, a good way to combat the problem in low light you can try using a higher ISO. Your ISO simply means the amount of sensitivity of light falling on your sensor. For example take traditional photography as a comparison to digital photography. Traditional photography ISO will be film sensitivity. (ISO in traditional terms works with film speed as well.)

The only set back in digital photography ISO is noise. If your ISO is perfect for the photo yet there is a significant increase in noise you can use software to sharpen up your digital photo. There are two good noise reduction software programs called“Noise Ninja” or “Neat Image”. If you don’t push the ISO higher you may find the problem with camera shake if a tripod is not in hand. By adjusting the ISO you will find that noise is better than camera shake. In digital photography noise will always be something to consider.
